Many of our patients come to treatment after having “hit bottom,” often as the result of a serious health crisis, such as an overdose. These people aren’t just “addicted” in the common meaning of the word, where they can’t keep themselves from using drugs. These patients literally need the drugs to survive. Their bodies have become so acclimated to the presence of drugs that they can’t function without them. For addicts like these, to stop “cold turkey” would trigger withdrawal symptoms, which can be life threatening. To avoid this complication, some of our patients go through a process known as detoxification (usually spoken of as “detox”), which allows the body to begin flushing out toxins—literally de-toxifying. These toxins are the residues of years of drug abuse, which have been slowly poisoning the addict. |

During this phase of treatment, the patient is monitored and given specific medications that counteract the effect of the abused substance, and also offset the unpleasant and painful physical process of withdrawal. This procedure can last from 24-72 hours. It’s important for both the patient and the family of the addict to recognize that detox is only the first step in a multi-stage process. The detoxification process is not, in itself, “treatment.” In other words, the patient’s addiction isn’t treated by detox. This process simply allows the patient’s mind and body to be prepared to engage in the complete program of treatment. We take great pride in our patients who stay in touch with us following treatment. When they express their gratitude for the role we played in helping them recover and create the successful lives they lead today, we recognize the importance of what we do. Although we’ll never know the achievements any one of our patients may some day accomplish, we can always be certain that their lives will be immeasurably improved as a result of treatment. This is what inspires us to continue, day by day, helping one patient at a time. |
